(Positive Pic Of the Day) PPOD #64: Market Day in Herrenberg

The smell of something sweet filled the air inside my house this morning. It smelled like cotton candy and cookies. I had to go find the source. I stepped outside my house and the smell intensified. I followed the scent around the corner, and then another, until I found the source. It came from a stand that sells cotton candy and freshly roasted nuts of all kinds. Most were covered in sugar or honey.

Tuesdays and Saturdays are Market days in Herrenberg. The Marktplatz or Market Place is full of sellers and buyers exchanging money and goods. There are different stands selling organic produce, aged cheese, freshly baked bread, and vibrant flowers. Today is a special market day since the market isn’t confined to the Marktplatz. Main streets of old town Herrenberg are lined with different stands selling food, household goods, and clothing.

I kept walking down the street until I recognized a familiar food. Long live Langos! Langos is a deep fried dough (the size of a platter) topped with your choice of sweet or salty ingredients. Customers can choose from: grated cheese, salt, garlic, sour cream, chili flakes, Nutella, and applesauce.

I met Manuela and Elke. They own the Langos stand that has been a stable part of the Herrenberg special market days. They have been in business for seven years. Elke gave me some quick info about their business. Her In-laws are Hungarian. The recipe was passed down to her by her mother-in-law. She partnered with Manuela and started the Langos business. They visit different towns to sell their product. They come to Herrenberg about once a month.

From the Langos stand to my table. I tried the salty & spicy and the sweet & nutty. I prefer the salty and spicy but both were delicious.

After my “not so light snack,” I decided go back to the market to buy some produce and walk off the extra calories. I love buying local and organically grown fruits and vegetables. It keeps my family healthy and helps support the community.

The weather is getting warmer and people in town have started planting flowers outside their houses. I’m adding this task to my “to-do” list for the month. This year, I’m saving a planter on my window sill strictly for herbs. Summer is going to be awesome with all the different colored foliage in front of the houses and windows.

I’m glad the sun came out to help brighten the mood in the market place. It started as a cold rainy day but it turned out nice and sunny.

Fresh fruits and vegetables will go well with dinner tonight. I hope you enjoy your day as much as I did. Have a great day!
