“Blumen selbst schneiden” is Deutsch for “cut your own flowers.”
There are fields of vibrant blooming flowers all over Germany. We have a few, just in our town. There’s usually a big, bright sign that says “Blumen selbst schneiden.” You pick and cut the flowers you like and drop the money in a locked box marked kasse. There’s nobody standing watch. There are no cameras mounted anywhere to make sure you pay the correct amount. It’s all based on the honor system. I love this show of faith in humanity.
This is perfect. Honesty seemed like a good moral value to reinforce today.”
My daughter was off from school today and she wanted to do something different. I took her to one of the flower fields in our town. We counted our coins to see how many she can cut. I’ve always taught her how important it is to do the right thing even when nobody is looking. With this in mind, she knew she can only cut 10 flowers. She took her time and chose each flower thoughtfully. Each flower cost 45 cents. For under €5 she got her bouquet of flowers and I got her smile.
